Boardwalk Franchisees Set to Open 120 Locations

Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries has finalized three new master franchise deals with experienced developers for 100 new restaurants across Northern New Jersey, Alabama, Indiana, and Kentucky. The three new development agents will open a mix of franchised and sub-franchised restaurants in their respective territories. The deals are the latest in a series of large, master Boardwalk territories secured by seasoned multi-unit restaurant developers. Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries currently has nine restaurants in seven US states, and more than 300 additional restaurants in development. The company plans to double its unit count to 18 operating restaurants by the end of 2011.

New Boardwalk franchisees Mukesh Banker and Naresh Bhadiyadara have secured the rights to open 30 Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries restaurants in Northern New Jersey. The business partners are also multi-unit franchisees for Dunkin’ Donuts and Subway.

New Boardwalk development agent Umang Patel has secured the rights to develop 30 Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries units across Indiana and in parts of Kentucky including Louisville and Lexington. Patel is also a multi-unit Subway franchisee.

Koti Aluri, a serial entrepreneur with investments in the hotel, financial, and banking industries, has purchased the entire state of Alabama for Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries development. Aluri is also the master franchisee for Boardwalk in North Carolina, and owns one Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries in Springfield, Virginia. In total, the developer will be opening 40 restaurants in Alabama, four additional restaurants in Virginia, and 20 in North Carolina, making him the largest master franchisee in the Boardwalk system.

“The Development Agent program is designed for experienced multi-unit restaurant developers who want to grow beyond the limitations of traditional franchise agreements,” says Boardwalk Founder and CEO Dave DiFerdinando. “Master franchising is an exceptional wealth building opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the Boardwalk brand and the fast-growing better burger segment.”

The three new master franchisees join a group of seasoned developers who were also drawn to the Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries master franchise model, including franchisees from Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Subway, and industry vets including the former CEO of Caribou Coffee and former COO of Jersey Mike's. As of August 2011, Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries has nine area development partners with territories spanning 12 US states.

Once upon a time, Americans had two options to alleviate their beef binging desires: visit a fast food joint or go to a traditional sit-down restaurant. The former often offered sub-par meals, while the latter required too much of a commitment of both time and money. The people demanded a happy medium, where they could be chowing down on quality eats within minutes of ordering.

Consumer desire for a new approach led to the birth of the better-burger segment, a relatively recent culinary invention that’s nonetheless produced some of the best burger chains (and beefy up-and-comers) driving the direction of the industry today. Perhaps the rise of the quality burger chain can actually be attributed, at least in part, to the downfall of the economy. In times of economic crisis maybe people start turning to something familiar (and cheap, for sure) – some call it comfort food. And there’s no denying that few forms of nourishment give humans as much satisfaction as a classic beef patty on a bun.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries

Named simply after the number of males in its founding family, which consisted of husband and wife Janie and Jerry Murrell and their four sons, the Five Guys franchise is now one of the biggest names in burger chains. Although the restaurant began captivating customers with fast-cooking burgers at its primordial Arlington, VA location in 1986, it was not until 2001 that the the business-savvy Murrell family pushed to capitalize on the brand’s great potential. Its first 15 years saw just 5 new locations open. Its next 10 years saw over 700. The restaurant’s cult-like following, filled with thousands of people who salivate at the first site of Five Guys’ famous grease stained brown paper bags, has now turned into something more closely resembling a mob.

To what does this franchise opportunity owe its success? To start, Five Guys has not wavered from its time-tested, customer-approved menu. With over 250,000 different combinations of toppings with which to decorate the burgers, the Five Guys menu offers a beautiful, if not delicious, combination of simplicity and complexity. Although the company has revisited this idea a time or two due to the increasing number of people with peanut allergies, Five Guys claims that its food and storefronts are safe for anyone who is allergic to peanuts.

In-N-Out Burger

With a fan following as strong as any fast-service restaurant in the country, this non-franchised burger establishment is the current gold standard for west coast burgers. In-N-Out burger was founded in 1948, long before any other burger joint in this article. Unlike Five Guys, In-N-Out actually originated as a drive-thru only joint, even though its burgers are, indeed, made to order. Like many better-burger joints, the company looks down upon the use of microwaves and freezers and claims to use only the freshest ingredients. Now, many of the 265+ In-N-Out burger locations offer indoor and outdoor seating along with traditional drive-thru service, and customers love the experience of going to an In-N-Out to dine in.

In-N-Out’s burgers and buns are its bread and butter. However, besides delicious hamburgers, French fries and milk shakes (which are made from real ice cream) are offered as well. And if for some reason customers don’t see a menu option with which they’d like to tickle their taste buds, they can ask about the burger joint’s famed (not-so) secret menu. Elevation Burger

Elevation burger is a breath of fresh air to the better-burger segment, both literally and figuratively. In an industry dominated by not-so-good-for-you options from a health standpoint, the Elevation Burger franchise only serves free-range, certified organic lean beef. Furthermore, you will not find any grains — or antibiotics, for that matter — being fed to the Elevation beef, which is 100% grass-fed. Shake Shack
A modern day “roadside” burger stand, as the restaurant dubs itself, Shake Shack’s roots can be traced back to 2004 at its Madison Square Park, NYC home. Its reputation for having delicious food is matched only by its now equally well-known reputation for having long lines – even by NYC standards! However, interestingly enough, the company does believe that the line is part of the Shake Shack experience, saying, “…people take to the wait, happy to be together amongst friends and strangers in the name of delicious food, in a fantastic setting.” (Right… so that may be the most pompous marketing statement of any burger chain on this list, but fortunately the Shack Cam allows die-hards to monitor the line at the company’s flagship location remotely).

As the chain’s popularity grew, so too did its reach. Once exclusive to NYC, Shake Shack has expanded to 14 locations worldwide, including locations in Kuwait and the U.A.E. Earlier this year, no location was under more scrutiny than its Washington D.C. restaurant – the first lady, now famous for her fight against childhood obesity, was caught enjoying an allegedly 1700 calorie meal consisting of a burger, fries and a shake from the Shack.

Shake Shack offers many of the same items as the rest: burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes. However, true to its Big Apple roots, Shake Shack also holds a liquor license. (Maybe that’s why customers so enjoy hanging out in in line).

Boardwalk Fresh Burger and Fries expands its opportunities in Virginia Beach.

Daniel Wilke, a resident of Virginia Beach, has joined the Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries franchise. Mr. Wilke plans on opening three locations in the Virginia Beach area over the next several years. When asked why he chose Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries, Mr. Wilke states, "I was exploring different concepts. I was drawn to Boardwalk because of their long establishment in the food business, and I liked their fresh, made-to-order concept. I feel that this is a segment of the market that is currently under-served and a natural fit for Virginia Beach."

Mr. Wilke has an extensive, 25 year background in the hotel industry, having worked for Hyatt Hotels, Starwood Hotels and as Corporate Director of Third-Party Management for TPG Hospitality. Boardwalk Burgers Holds its Grand Opening

Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries opened this morning in Springfield to the cheers of the folks who'd camped outside the store all night to win a coupon book for a free burger a week for a year.

A ribbon cutting ceremony held shortly after 10 a.m. featured Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity, who reminisced about his own past vacations to Ocean City, Md. growing up. Boardwalk bills its burgers and fries as traditional Ocean City fare, with the name of the city emblazoned on the walls of the store several times.

"Now we don't have to leave Springfield to get Ocean City burgers and fries anymore," Herrity said, quipping that he was surprised that his staff were even in the office the morning rather than at the store (his office is a block or two down the road in the West Springfield Government Center).

Several members of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce were present. Board President Anna Kaviani made a few remarks to open up the brief ceremony.

"Thank you for making this selection in Springfield," Kaviani said. "Thank you for being here."

Store owner Koti Aluri emphasized the community aspect of his business.

"We are a company that wants to be community oriented, so we're going to have a lot of events," Aluri said.

"The last four months I've spent here in Springfield - the community response is phenomenal," Aluri said later to Burke Patch. "I want to grow this business to where it's not just a place to get food, but a place for a community, where you come after Little League games."

After the ceremony, the door was opened up to the campers outside. Each of the 50 winners of the free burger a week for a year coupon book were announced into the store with a loudspeaker and cheers, where they posed with Aluri for a picture.

Marcy Laub, 17, who said she'd planned for the camp out for two weeks prior, said the experience had been worth it, despite some drama over a non-official list of names one person in line had put together.

WMZQ 98.7, a country radio station in the area, will be at the store much of the day, giving out King's Dominion tickets rather than what the store previously advertised as Rascal Flatts tickets.
